Songs And Music

Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs’.

Psalm 100 vs. 2

‘Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.’

Ephesians 5 vs 19 and 20

We are encouraged throughout the Bible, to use songs and music in praise and worship to God.

These can be simple expressions of joy, or even passages of Scripture set to music. They can be great hymns and anthems from the past, or simple choruses which can be easily repeated as we go about our daily tasks.

They do not have to be the latest release by popular Christian groups and singers. In fact, the Christian music publishing industry has become highly secularized in its approach over the past few decades.

Some years ago, I ran a four-session songwriting house group. Those who attended had never previously considered writing songs, but loved to express praise and worship to God with songs. Following the sessions, some beautiful, sensitive worship songs had been written, inspired by the Holy Spirit, which we were able to include during collective worship. These were totally inexperienced songwriters who allowed the Holy Spirit to inspire words and music.

Over the years I have written more than 300 songs, Inspired by the Holy Spirit, some have surprised me. Having given God all the credit, I have simply asked God to use them as He sees fit. Again, I have been regularly surprised at the opportunities He has given me to share songs in unexpected situations. The response to the songs has been equally surprising. He has used them to challenge, encourage, convict and release those who have listened.

I write this to encourage others to wait on God. See whether He gives you words, music or both. As simple as the result may be, He may give you an opportunity to share it to someone who needs to hear it.
